THE TERM “WIDE-WIDTH FABRIC” IS PRETTY SELF EXPLANATORY. THE QUESTION IS, HOW DOES IT APPLY TO YOUR PROJECT? READ ON FOR A QUICK INTRO TO WIDE WIDTH FABRICS AND WHY THEY’RE A GREAT OPTION FOR CURTAINS!

A wide-width fabric is usually anywhere from 280cm up to 320cm wide from selvage to selvage.  This is roughly double the width of conventional decorating fabrics which are around 137-150cm wide.

Most sheer drapery fabrics and, and some solid drapery fabrics, are wide width. This is so the fabric can be applied horizontally along the window without the need to sew vertical seams. The result is a continuous curtain, uninterrupted by joins.

Wide fabrics for sheer curtains…

Creating a continuous curtain by applying the fabric horizontally is particularly desirable for sheer curtains as light passing through the fabric will make the unsightly vertical seams more noticeable.

But the benefits of working with wide fabrics are not restricted to sheer curtains only. Less seams also benefit machinists as curtains can be made in a fraction of the time or effort. Sometimes there are also economies of scale to be enjoyed by working with wide width fabrics, particularly in large curtaining projects.

Wide just became WIDER…

Until recent times, the vast majority of wide-width fabrics were a maximum of 300cm wide.  As average window heights have increased however, fabric mills and suppliers have invested in new technologies to produce fabrics that are up to 320cm wide.

Decorators Market offers a wide (no pun intended) range of quality sheer drapery fabrics that are 320cm wide and we’ve shortlisted them to save you the hassle of searching!
